In the present article discusses the origin of reactive oxygen species in the semen of mammals and pathways to generate these metabolites. Also characterized briefly antioxidant enzyme systems of semen. Presents current views on the positive participation of reactive oxygen species in the process of fertilization and the toxic effects of oxidative stress on the structure and biological function of mammalian sperm.
