Heterodimeric nuclear receptors: constitutive androstane receptor (CAR), pregnane X receptor and the steroid and xenobiotic receptor (PXR / SXR) are associated with many non-specific ligands, such as endogenous and exogenous toxic metabolites of xenobiotics. After activation, ligand receptors are able to induce gene expression, and stimulation of the cytochromes P450. Site-specific DNA response is recognized and bound by the pregnane X receptor and steroid receptor xenobiotics and occurs mainly in the cytochromes CYP3A gene promoter and the constitutive response element androstane receptor CYP2 promoter. Both families of cytochromes play a major role in the metabolism of xenobiotics and detoxification. These receptors are located in the liver and intestine, where detoxification reactions take place. Described species specificity of both receptors and their ligands selectivity and interactions.
