Benzodiazepines are a class of drugs acting sedative , hypnotic and anticonvulsant . The therapeutic potential of the GABAA receptor mediated located in the central nervous system. Benzodiazepine binding site called the peripheral benzodiazepine receptor ( PRB ) were also identified outside of the central nervous system, adrenal glands, heart , kidney, ovaries or testes but also in glial cells of the brain. The PRB includes protein receptor pk18 found in the outer mitochondrial membrane and possibly channel VDAC ( Ang voltage dependent anion channel ), and adenine nucleotide translocase . PRB assigned a receptor involved in the transport of cholesterol to the inner mitochondrial membrane , cell proliferation , the flow of calcium ions across cell membranes , cellular respiration , immune responses , apoptosis , and neoplastic transformation . PRB expression is tissue-specific and species , depending on the level of hormones in the body and exposure to stress.
