The sub-family of the P-type ATPases superfamily, P 1B -ATPases, comprises primary metal transporters using ATP as the source of energy. According to their function, they contain the specific structural motifs (Cys-Pro-Cys/His/Ser motif) and His rich domains, that may participate in metal binding and transport across the membranes. Higher plants possess more P 1B -ATPases then do other organisms and these are located in different cell membranes and tissues having a variety of tasks. It was shown that plant P 1B -ATPases play a crucial role in the distribution of metals inside the cells and tissues as well as in the exclusion of toxic metals from the cytosol. According to this, the different metal specifi- city was revealed for various members of plant P 1B -ATPases.We present the family of P 1B -ATPases with emphasis on the role of plant metal pumps in maintaining of metal homeostasis: delivery of the essential metals to target proteins and detoxification of cell from the heavy metals excess.
